MATTER.01
The Kyō Tensile Bench & Joint System
A study in material porosity and tensile equilibrium. Japanese red cedar segments are slotted using a non-standard 15-degree compound miter, locked by an articulated stainless-steel pin joint and tension rods derived from Piano’s high-tech structural expressivism.
Rather than hiding the structural load path inside a solid timber core, the bench dissolves the block into rhythmic slats that modulate light and ventilation, transforming structural resistance into an audible visual rhythm.
MATERIALITY
Sugi Cedar, Cast 316 Stainless Steel, Braided Aircraft Cable
TECTONIC INTENT
Compressive timber lattice counter-balanced by tensile core
MUSICAL RATIO
Golden Mean louver spacing (1 : 1.618 cadence)
